High pointing is sport of trying to reach the highest geographical points in any given area.

The most popular form of high pointing is attempting to reach the highest point in all 50 U.S. states.  Whether done rapid fire in a year or two, or just checking off a list of climbs during your lifetime, high pointing might be just the excuse you need to go find some adventure.

Get Started High Pointing

The first step to your high pointing quest is to find the location of the high points in the states near you.  There are several good websites such as America's Roof that have put together good lists of each state's high points, and have even rated them according to difficulty.  Depending on where you live, the closest highpoint may be a simple drive-up destination, or if you live in the western states, an intensive climb may be required.

Once you have chosen your first destination you're ready to compile some good maps of the area and head out.  Some of the high point websites have journals and tips from travelers who have already reached the summit, I'd suggest you print them out and bring them along to assist in finding any landmarks along the way.

High Pointing Gear

Here's the beauty of highpointing, until you are ready to knock out some of the highpoints in the rocky mountain states or Denali in Alaska.  You can go highpointing with the basic hiking gear you already own.  There really is no such thing as high pointing gear, just a car to get there and regular hiking and climbing gear.

Of course, if you're looking for an excuse to buy some cool new adventure gear, you should have no problem using highpointing to justify your purchase (at least to yourself).

High Pointing Variations

There are other highpoint adventures available even if you don't care to travel to the 50 state highpoints.  For example, you can try to reach to the highpoint of each county in your state to save on travel expenses.  If you want a big challenge, make a list of all the mountain peaks over 14,000 ft in the country and start checking them off.  Or, the antithesis of high pointing is low pointing.  If you really don't like to climb you can try to find and reach the lowest point in any given area.

In summary

Highpointing probably shouldn't be the main, or even a large, focus of your life.  But if you have a hard time picking a destination for your next Christian adventure, high pointing is a good way to organize and plan for your next trip and make some new friends in the process..
